When searching the web for fun and easy things for preschool age kids to do during the summer, this particular one caught my eye. Homemade Finger Paint. It looked easy enough and quick enough that I could make it without a lot of fuss in my famous rolly chair (as standing too long causes severe Braxton Hicks which suck in this last trimester). It also seemed like a good idea, paired with a swimsuit, a sprinkler, and a very energetic and cagey 2 1/2 year old.
Here is the recipe if you would like to make this as well:
Homemade Finger Paint
1 cup flour
2 tbs. salt
1 1/2 cup cold water
1 1/2 cup hot water
Food coloring
All you have to do is this:
1. mix the flour and salt together in a medium saucepan
2. add cold water slowly while mixing with a whisk thoroughly
3. add hot water and mix thoroughly
4. turn on burner and continue mixing with a spreader until it comes to a boil
5. turn off burner and mix out all the lumps
6. let it cool
7. separate into containers (I used clean baby food jars) and mix in food coloring
AND VOILA! Finger Paint!
One thing to note on this paint, it must be stored in the refrigerator (I'm guessing to avoid molding).
I made four colors for Little Miss Brilynn: Green, Blue, Red, and Purple
I think they came out great! Except for some reason my purple is not very purple.
I think I didn't add enough red in with the blue. Maybe next time. :)
I also read that a fun activity for kids is to add a small amount of the paint and dilute it in a spray bottle of water for them to spray on paper for a very adorable art project. Will have to try some time soon!
